MAHAMAYA
Rabindranath Tagore
The story of Mahamaya covers the three subject and themes
(societal norms, mythology, and romance). The reflection of the societal norms
in the story is when Mahamaya was cremated alive, after her marriage to a dying
Brahmin, who later died, living her already a widow the next day. It is in the
Indian culture that the widow should be cremated alive on her husband’s
funeral. Indian myth is reflected in Mahamaya is when Rajeev confessed his love
for Mahamaya. Rajeev by that time was influenced by the god of love, Kamadeva,
who stays alert even their lord of creature is “in the drowsy state.” These
gods are the deities in Indian culture. The story of Rajeev’s and Mahamaya’s
love in the story id the reflection of romance in the story. Their love,
influenced by the society and the god of love, made the two apart but was again
reunited, fulfilling Mahamaya’s promise to Rajeev. However, their being
together was broken when Rajeev’s promise to Mahamaya just to be with him was
broken, making Mahamaya decided to leave immediately.

THE MOLE
The text of “The Mole” is
an undated letter written by Sayoko to her husband of some
years. She
tells him about a dream that she has had. The night before,
during a visit to her mother’s home,
Sayoko reports that she dreamed of the mole located high on
the upper right side of her back, near her shoulder. Through her reflections on
her marriage and life and her account of her dream abouther mole, Sayoko
reveals both her past and present. She knows that her husband will know
aboutthe mole about which she has dreamed because it has been the focus of
dissension between themfrom the earliest days of their marriage. When she lay
in bed, her left arm across her chest, playingwith the mole, her husband scolded
her. It was a bad habit. The mole would grow larger. She shouldhave it removed.
Sayoko’s letter tells her husband of the shame she felt
when he first began scolding. Even more
important, she says that she first became faintly conscious
of the oppression of her marriage; her lack of privacy, her lack of refuge, her
total vulnerability to his control. Although she then tried todismiss his
attention to her habit of playing with the mole as inconsequential, now that
she has beenaway from him for many years, she sees its importance.Thinking
through her life as she writes, Sayoko tells her husband the history of her
relation to her mole
a history that is also the story of her own inner life. As
a child she began to play with themole, perhaps because her mother and sisters
had noticed it
perhaps even finding it charming
and drew her attention to it. She remembers, however, that
her mother also scolded her during
puberty for her habit of rubbing the mole and staring
absently into space.

THE COCK
The story tells us that in every dark cloud is a silver
lining. We should not think that when we are given trials, it is already the
end of the world. We must be wise enough to know that problems are there to
make us stronger.
I know that in
our lives right now it is very rare that are problems would turn out to make us
happy. There are no cocks that would put us in trouble but in the end letting
us enjoy what we want to have in life. Nevertheless, we can make our problems
our friends by learning from them.
The story,
The Cock, is a masterpiece. It is indeed simple yet it is an eye-opener. Do not
take this story as merely a piece with words but an opportunity to look at an
interesting part of one's life.

The Food Of Paradise
The theme of the whole short story is hope and faith
towards our God. Sure it tackles about Allah and we filipinos are mostly
Christians but the teaching is just as the same. We must have hope and faith to our God because
when everything is at lost, He is the only one we cancling to. Also, it is more
of a religious approach. And another
thing, weshould not question our one and only creator. It is better to do good
works and just pray to God that he will
guide us in every way and be more thankful than ever.
